Welcome to the Black Excellence Series

As conversations about racial injustice and inequality continue, I am happy to see more people take initiative to learn more about the lack of diversity plaguing the classical music world. For decades, black artists have been severely underrepresented in the classical world and as a black oboist myself I can attest to that feeling of being out of place a lot of the times. My hope is that we learn more about black excellence from the past & present which I hope will change the way we program music and fill orchestral seats. While there are many great organizations that already creating change to diversify the classical world we still have a long way to go.

JDW Sheet Music has created a series to help educate people on the black artists who made significant contributions to the classical world but don’t see the same national praise and recognition as their white counterparts today. The first episode will feature the ground breaking composer Florence B. Price.
